This very special yarn comes from the fleece of some happy sheep that were raised on a single farm, in the high midlands of Tasmania. They are tended by a passionate shepherdess, the owner and founder of White Gum Wool, Nan Bray. Nan uses no herbicides, pesticides or fungicides; allowing the the land to function as a real and vital ecosystem. Here the sheep graze, in a multigenerational flock; with nutricional wisdom being passed down from one generation of sheep to the next, creating a healthy flock of sheep that produce some of the softest, highest quality wool available- 17 micron fibre that is unparalleled as a hand knitting yarn. This calibre of wool is usually reserved for high end men's suiting, but thanks to one passionate woman, this wool is available to us to knit with!
Nan’s beautiful merinos have never been mulesed and can wag their undocked tails behind them. When you buy White Gum Wool, not only are you buying a superb Australian product, but you are making a choice that honours the landscape, animals and people that make it all possible.
This yarn has been dyed by hand by Claire Probst, the owner and founder of We Love Knitting, a small Australian business. Claire dyes yarn, with the help of her Mum Ingrid, in their home studio in the picturesque forest of Sassafras, a small town in the Dandenong Ranges; 45 minutes from Melbourne.
All We Love Knitting yarns are hand dyed in small batches, by hand with careful attention to detail. Please be aware that the colour can vary slightly between dye lots so be sure to order enough yarn for your project. When purchasing multiple skeins of one colour, your yarn will be dyed in the same lot. Please remember that hand dyed yarns all have slight variations in colour within each skein, even for the solid colours. This is what makes them special!
